Your OKC July Energy Bill Doubled. Here is What Actually Happened.

Most OKC homeowners blame the AC when their July bill arrives 60 percent higher than June. About 6 out of 10 times we go out for a high-bill diagnostic, the AC is running fine. Here is the OG&E math and the 5 things actually driving the spike.
The short version
Two things happen in OKC every June that combine to spike your July bill. First, OG&E's summer rate schedule kicks in around June 1. Residential power becomes roughly 50 percent more expensive per kWh than it was in May. Second, your AC starts running 14 to 16 hours a day instead of the 4 to 6 hours of mild spring weather.
Multiply those together and a typical OKC home that paid 110 dollars in May pays 220 to 280 in July. That is not your AC breaking. That is math.
But if your bill jumped MORE than 60 to 80 percent over your normal summer, something else is going on. That is the part we can usually fix.
The OG&E summer rate calendar (the part most people miss)
OG&E residential rate schedules switch to summer pricing on June 1 and switch back October 1. The exact rates change each filing year, but for 2026 the gap between summer and winter pricing is the largest it has been in five years. Time-of-use customers see an even bigger gap during the 3 PM to 6 PM peak window.
If you are on a standard residential plan and your June bill arrived only slightly higher than May, the rate change has not hit yet. July is when the math catches up. Full month at summer rates plus full month at peak runtime.
5 HVAC issues we see that push bills 30 percent higher than normal
These are the actual problems we find on high-bill diagnostic calls. Listed by frequency over the last three summers in the OKC Metro.
- Dirty outdoor condenser coil. A coil packed with cottonwood, grass clippings, or dust makes the compressor work 20 to 35 percent harder for the same cooling. Most common in Edmond and northwest OKC homes near mature trees.
- Low refrigerant from a slow leak. The system runs but moves less heat per cycle, so it runs longer to reach setpoint. Often shows up as warmer air at the supply vents and a unit that never seems to cycle off in the afternoon.
- A capacitor that is failing but has not failed completely. Compressor starts are inefficient, current draw spikes on every restart. Hard to detect without a multimeter.
- A blower motor running on a worn capacitor or with degraded bearings. Pulls more amps to move the same airflow. The indoor fan can be the silent bill killer.
- Wrong thermostat programming. We see homeowners set the thermostat to 68 degrees because they cannot get comfortable, when the real issue is uneven airflow. The system runs constantly trying to hit a setpoint it physically cannot reach in the hot rooms.
When the HVAC is fine and something else is the problem
About 4 in 10 of our high-bill calls turn out to be non-HVAC issues. We diagnose them anyway because we are there, but we usually do not charge for the fix when it is not an HVAC problem.
- Attic insulation that has settled or compressed. Common in homes 15+ years old. A 2-inch loss across an OKC attic can add 10 to 18 percent to summer cooling load.
- A thermostat installed on a hallway wall that gets afternoon sun through a nearby window. The thermostat thinks the house is hotter than it is, so the AC runs longer. Move the thermostat or shade the window.
- Bath fans or dryer venting that is leaking conditioned air into the attic. Easy to miss, easy to fix.
- A neighbor's tree shade pattern changed. Sounds silly but we have walked customers through this. A removed tree in a neighbor's yard can add 60 to 90 minutes of direct sun on a south-facing wall, raising AC runtime measurably.
What to do this week if your bill scared you
Two things to do yourself before calling anyone.
- Check your OG&E account online. Look at your kWh usage for July vs June and vs last July. If kWh is up 20 percent but bill is up 40 percent, you are seeing the rate change. If kWh is up 50 percent, something on your side is running harder.
- Pull and look at your indoor air filter. If it is gray and you cannot see through it, replace it now. That alone often drops compressor runtime 5 to 10 percent on a stressed system.
What we do on a high-bill diagnostic call
We check refrigerant pressures, capacitor microfarad readings, blower motor amp draw, static pressure across the air handler, thermostat calibration, and the outdoor coil condition. The visit usually runs 60 to 90 minutes. The diagnostic fee is waived if you proceed with any recommended repair.
We tell you what we find with the numbers attached. If your bill spike is the rate change plus normal summer runtime, we say that and leave. We do not invent problems to pad the invoice.
FAQ
- Why is my July bill so much higher than my June bill if the weather is similar?
- Two reasons. OG&E summer rates fully apply for the first time in July (full month). And July averages 8 to 12 more hours per week of compressor runtime than June because daytime temps hit peak. Both stack.
- Will a new high-efficiency AC fix my high bills?
- Sometimes. A jump from a 14 SEER to an 18 SEER2 system can drop cooling cost 15 to 20 percent on a like-for-like comparison. But if your real issue is insulation, ductwork, or thermostat programming, a new AC will not fix it. We can tell you which problem you actually have before you spend 10,000 dollars.
