Heat pumps move heat rather than creating it directly, and many systems use auxiliary heat under certain conditions. Your equipment documentation and measured performance matter more than a universal outdoor-temperature rule.

Why heat-pump operation changes as it gets colder

Signs worth documenting

Check the thermostat for auxiliary or emergency-heat indicators and record the outdoor and indoor temperatures. Do not judge the system only by how warm the supply air feels to your hand.

For service, ask whether the issue involves airflow, controls, defrost operation, auxiliary heat, refrigerant performance, or another measured fault. ENERGY STAR recommends checking controls, electrical connections, coils, refrigerant level, and blower components during maintenance.

For replacement, ask how the home's heating load was calculated, what the selected model can deliver at local winter design conditions, and how auxiliary or dual-fuel controls will be set. Request the model-specific performance data and complete written scope.

Is auxiliary heat always a sign that the heat pump is broken?
No. Auxiliary heat can be part of normal system operation. Frequent or unexpected use should be evaluated against the equipment design, thermostat settings, outdoor conditions, and measured performance.
Should I switch the thermostat to emergency heat?
Use emergency heat only as directed by the equipment or thermostat documentation, or by a qualified technician. It usually disables normal heat-pump operation and relies on backup heat.
