Cottonwood Season in Edmond: Why Your AC Stops Cooling in April and May

If you live in Coffee Creek, Oak Tree, Spring Creek, or anywhere with mature cottonwoods around your property, you already know the white fluff. What most homeowners do not know is exactly what it does to their outdoor AC unit, and how predictable the resulting service calls are.
What cottonwood does to an AC condenser
Female cottonwood trees release seed fluff in late April through May. The fluff is light, airborne, and statically attracted to the outdoor coil fins on your AC condenser. Over a two-week stretch, a unit sitting near a mature cottonwood can accumulate a visible layer of fluff coating the entire coil surface.
The coil's job is to dump heat from the refrigerant into the outside air. Block the airflow with cottonwood fluff and the system has to work harder to move the same amount of heat. The compressor runs longer, current draw goes up, capacitor wear accelerates, and on hot days the system simply cannot keep up with the cooling load.
Edmond neighborhoods most affected
Cottonwoods grow well in Oklahoma and the older Edmond subdivisions have the most of them. We get the heaviest cottonwood-related call volume from Coffee Creek, the Oak Tree area, Spring Creek, parts of the Edmond Memorial corridor, and older streets off North Bryant. Newer developments in north Edmond have fewer mature cottonwoods and see less of this.
If your property has a female cottonwood within 100 feet of the outdoor unit, you are in the affected zone. The downwind direction matters too. Even a tree on your neighbor's lot a block over can dump fluff onto your unit if the spring wind is consistent from that direction.
What you can do this weekend
- Turn off the AC at the thermostat AND at the disconnect box near the unit. Do not just turn off the thermostat. Power needs to be off at the source.
- Pull off any visible fluff from the top grille and the side fins by hand. Wear gloves. The fins are thin metal and bend easily.
- Spray the coil fins with a garden hose. From the inside out if possible (some units let you remove the top to spray from the inside, others do not). Low pressure. No pressure washer. The fins will bend if you blast them.
- Let the unit fully drain before turning power back on. Twenty minutes is usually enough.
- Replace your indoor air filter at the same time. Cottonwood gets into the indoor return air too, especially in older homes with leaky return ducts.
When to call a tech instead
If the fluff has built up into a thick mat that does not rinse off, or if you are seeing the unit cycle on and off rapidly while cooling poorly, call us. At that point we are not just cleaning fluff. We are checking refrigerant pressures, capacitor health, and contactor wear that may have been accelerated by weeks of overheated operation.

Why this matters more in 2026
Two factors stack on top of the cottonwood problem this year. Refrigerant costs are up (we covered the R-410A pricing shift separately) so any repair triggered by neglected cleaning is more expensive than it used to be. And SEER2-rated newer equipment has tighter coil fin spacing for efficiency, which means cottonwood fluff packs in faster on newer units than on 2010-era equipment.
Translation: ignoring cottonwood fluff costs more in 2026 than it did in 2022. A 15-minute rinse this weekend prevents a service call later that is likely to run several hundred dollars at any OKC HVAC shop.

- Will running my AC harder push the cottonwood out?
- No. Cottonwood fluff is on the outside of the coil where the airflow is pulling it in. Running the system harder packs it tighter, not looser. Power down and clean.
- Should I cover my AC during cottonwood season?
- Do not cover the unit. Covers trap moisture and cause corrosion. Instead, do the rinse procedure once or twice during peak fluff weeks. Some homeowners build a temporary mesh screen on the upwind side, which can help reduce direct deposition.
